Empowering and Developing Our Community Through Sport

History

Briefly, Durbanville started as a refreshing and watering station between Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Malmesbury.  The main reason for the location was the strong water spring.  Because of the fertile soil, farms were established and industries arose to support the farms and travelers.  Durbanville “rested, restored and provided for travelers and sent them on their way!”

History also records the unfortunate reality that racism and oppression of certain racial groups has existed in Durbanville from as far back as 1853; separate voting rights, disparate wages, separate schools, separate churches, and the provision of separate areas for housing were accepted practices.  A document describing the “Peace Celebrations” to mark the end of the Great War (1919) records, “ … the Council gave each white child two shillings and brown children one …”

Misuse of alcohol dates back to 1856 when farmers gave each worker “ … each day, including Sunday …. up to four half-pints of wine … “.   Even today, the legacy remains: alcohol dependence, the use of illegal drugs, child abuse and poverty remain some of the social problems in Durbanville.

There is a real need to deal with racism, alcohol, drugs and child abuse and this project, through the presence of a permanent gymnastics facility in the community, will directly address these issues

Recreation and sport date back to 1843, with the establishment of the Cape of Good Hope Friendly Hunting and Sporting Society.  Regrettably, sports are mainly for the privileged and there is little integration. There has never been a gymnastics sporting facility in Durbanville, although it is clearly needed

Target Population

Our target population includes children from the ages of 5 to 19, which constitutes their developmental and life forming years.  An early start would potentially enable them to perform up to international standards and even participate in the Olympic Games. Durbanville is central to Morningstar and Fisantkraal (two historically segregated and underprivileged areas) and indeed to the whole of the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town

The following figures extracted from the 2001 Census show the population sizes

Alpha Primary School is located in Morningstar with 826 pupils. It is has 351 girls and 375 boys. 399 pupils come from the community while 427 are bussed in from a 50 kilometers radius from the school.  The commuting pupils are from farms and are children of farm workers.

Points to consider

Feeding – In association with other organizations 100 pupils are given soup three time a week.  Some of the parents form the school and people from the community prepare the soup, bread and rolls.  Currently all the food is donated.

Drugs – Motivational talks are starting at the school and there are volunteer drug consuls assisting. However, it is key to have the gymnastics facility, which will be able assist in keep the children occupied and a healthy identity with gymnastics.

Racism – Once the new facility is built children from other areas are will come and train with the disadvantaged children where they will mix more freely with people from other races and cultures and enjoy our rainbow nation.  When one considers the history of this community, this project is directly aimed at addressing the people who were once disadvantaged.

Considering the social issues, the large number of children, the number of underprivileged households and the absence of a permanent gymnastics facility, there is certainly a glaring need for this project
